The Audition of Mike Mitsak - 'We Are, The Colors'

Year

1963

Story

'We Are, The Colors' didn't only become the Colors anthem at gigs but also their audition song. Every time a new vocalist auditioned for the band they would have to make up a new lyrics, often on the spot. The band themselves would also pick a different style to play the song in. Just before Tex Stein joined the band, Mike Mitsak auditioned for the band and these are the lyrics he sang.

Lyrics

When I started this song, I wanted it to be About the Rajistan rug-weaving community About fingers on strings plucking endlessly About beauty woven by practicality And so you see it’s up to me I am, The Colors And so you see it’s up to me I am, The Colors But all things alas, a subject to the tweak As there’s a band behind me playing as a squeak this song Which is not all mine share and share alike Oh my god, this goddam song has taken flight from me And so you see it’s not up to me We are, The Colors And so you see it’s not up to me CHORUS They want this song to be about a little man Who got concussed on the plane with a flying-pan Forcing me to throw my rag up over my head And summon ice for the little man’s head instead Thirty-thousand feet and the little man’s out cold The child with the pan weathers mother’s scold The bass player and drummer drink scotch I’m told While the others eat the simple food that they’re dolled And so you see we have to eat We are, The Colors And so you see we have to eat CHORUS And so you see we have to eat We are, The Colors And so you see we have to eat CHORUS We are, The Colors
